Above and below: Scott McNeil and Kirby Morrow: Inside the Voice Actor Studio: Scott McNeil (left) and Kirby Morrow (right) spoke for a packed audience about their very active vocal work. With such credits like He-Man and GiJoe behind them, they reiterated that voice acting is the purist form of acting and being able to be recognized based on voice is an honor. Topics and subjects covered the physical parts of voice acting by moving hands and body around to enhance a voice for a particular scene, doing cultural research to properly fit a character, and announcing new anime projects for fans to look forward to. Highlights also included Scott's impersonations of Christoher Lloyd, Chris Walken, and a Scottish character from his stint on Highlander as well as funny moments about the Ranma insanity in which he was able to voice several characters with wacky results.
Fan Fiction: Numerous fans of anime and manga fiction gathered together to discuss their thoughts and feelings on enjoying the community efforts and ongoing process to deliver quality stories. It is essential authors must enjoy what they do and stay on track to write stories based on drama, sci-fi, horror, and otherwise. It's always been an obstacle to make headway into the Japanese community because of the language barriers, but it has been moving slowly with time.
Hooked on Drawing Manga: The ever-talented and experienced Bruce Lewis outlined a power-packed lecture on delivering a manga from day one to final publication. Starting with the basic tools: poster board, nib pens, and india ink for a quality work. An idea is hashed out of a rough story: characters and places are drawn as concepts and then refined to fit with the story. Pre-production: stories are developed into synopsis and then characters are drawn to model sheets for reference. Production: pencil sketches are hashed out into page breakdowns, penciled boards are tightened for details, and inking goes on for the finished art. Post-production: artwork is all scanned in, cleaned up, and ready to publish! Of course, it's not quite that easy as Bruce insists on keeping quality high with accurate backgrounds, doing immense research when using historical information in stories, and taking advantage of online resources for good references. Topics also included dealing with humidity and waterproof inks, using lightboxes, applying halftones for textures and grayscales for print publishing, and explaining the differences between Japanese manga studios where it's basically a one-man team doing everything and American comic studios where there is strength in numbers. |
