Going to conventions is not just about joining the panels or cosplaying as your favorite character, it's also about getting involved with friends in the anime community by attending the cool workshops featuring lessons on figure and mecha drawing, cel-painting, or building models.

SugoiCon 2000

Above and below: Steve Bennett held his popular packed workshops for the cel-painting enthusiasts.  With a small fee, young and old attendees could pick up some essential cel-painting materials, grab a free space, and listen to Steve's very helpful lessons while learning and applying their newfound or experienced skills.
Not enough work for you?  Bob Cobb hosted a model building workshop where fans could observe models being built and talk about basic to advanced techniques.  Models featured ranged from mass-produced plastic polystyrene kits to modified mecha ligaments as well as advanced resin figure builds in progress.
