Kraken Con 2015 celebrated another fine year in its Oakland digs. Split into a Spring Kraken and Fall Kraken, it offers the San Francisco Bay Area two good relaxing alternatives to the bigger summer conventions. This year's Spring Kraken was hosted in the Oakland Convention Center and Fall Kraken is due to take place on the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier on September 26, 2015.
Pre-Registration badge pickup was a quick and painless process. No wait and no line when I arrived at 12 noon. At-con Reg lines were long but went by really fast. Staff had mobile scanners to quickly scan the barcode printouts, pick up your badge and con materials, and go! Dealers Hall was again shared with Artists Alley and had the usual assortment of vintage anime merchandise mixed with current favorites. Artists Alley took up more space than the dealers tables. Popular art included Free, Attack on Titan, Sailor Moon, and more. The popular Maid Cafe took up a space in the back and gathered quite a good crowd throughout the weekend. Gaming area took up another section with PC gaming and Dance machines.
With most everything contained in the big hall downstairs and a few panel rooms upstairs, big colorful signage made it easy to navigate and really not need a map. Extra signs were everywhere with arrows pointed to panels and workshops. Most of the events ran their course, many of them scattered inside the Dealers Hall area and the rest on the second level. The always popular Costume Contest packed in quite a load of attendees and Guests of Honor gathered their own respective crowds and autograph sessions. There was the usual video screening lounge located next to the Gaming area.
Relatively small in attendance compared to the much larger summer conventions, Kraken Con is a recommended visit for those who desire a relaxing alternative that still keeps your entertained throughout the weekend. I look forward to attending next year's Kraken Con.
Be sure to visit the next Kraken-con!
