Phones are everywhere, no matter how techno-phobic you are.  Subways all have the basic green styles that take coins or magnetic phone cards.  Some even take infrared output from your celphone if it's linked to an electronic bank.  Newest phones now all have color screens, are typically super-thin and light and feature games neat incoming call music, MP3 players, and now still-or-motion cameras to transmit to your other party.  At almost every convenience service store like Lawson's or 7-Eleven, you can find a purple digital machine that will (for a price) burn a CD or DVD of a popular song or video title for you as well as download shopping info to your celphone or Sony MemoryStick.  Everything is so connected in Japan, it's almost scary, but when you need it, you'll never laugh at it again.
